After 12 months of using the Phase One P45 strapped to the back of our Contax 645 system, the benefits of having medium format operating alongside the Canon DSLR gear seems to be a match made in heaven. The former is perfect for the carefully calculated, high quality stuff, whereas the Canon reaches focus and sharp shooting speeds the larger Contax could only dream of. In the coming months we’ll be uploading some You Tube video footage of the Phase gear in action, hopefully showing how (and why) we use it - plus a few handy hints and tips.
I know some people questioned my sanity when I decided to go with Contax for a medium format system. The Hasselblad, they reasoned, offered newer technology. It did indeed, but at a price. I know it’s slow, with haphazard focusing and the parts availability isn’t brilliant. But there’s something about the Contax I love… Carl Zeiss lenses! They’re just sweet - over engineered and way ahead of their time when launched.
